How To: Replace BlackBerry Screen Glass Protector

At my work we have many BlackBerry Curve 8330 phones. It is amazing what nurses and home health aids can do to their phones due to every day usage. One particular employee had fallen on her phone and scratched the screen and keyboard up really good. As a result of that unfortunate event I got the lucky job of replacing the clear plastic cover that protects the screen. Below I will outline what was done.

Tools:

  • T5 Torques screwdriver
  • Plastic pry tool – for opening the the case without leaving marks
  • Knife
  • Scissors

As you can see in the above image the screen has all kinds of dark scratches all over it. This clear portion of the screen is what will be removed and replaced. First start off with removing the back cover and the battery. We will be removing the 2 T5 Torques screws (under the red arrows in below picture) at the top of the phone to take the front of the phone off.

Next you need to remove the plastic clip that holds the bottom portion of the case together. There are 2 clips on the top and 2 clips on the bottom of this piece. I usually start from the back and pull it forward. Be careful removing this piece as there are ribbon cables below it that can be damaged.

Next carefully move your plastic prying tool around the edges of the phone to separate the top from the bottom of the phone. There are 4 tabs that you need to watch out for when removing the top.

As you can see in the below photo the location of the 4 tabs that are still holding the top of the phone on.

Once the top is removed take your knife (I used my trusty Leatherman) and slide it between the main plastic of the top and the clear plastic screen cover. This cover is only double sided taped on.

Once this plastic piece is removed you need to put new double sided tape on the gray plastic piece to hold the new screen protector on. The place you purchased your new piece from should provide this for you.

When putting the new piece back on the phone take note of the 4 plastic nubs that slide into holes on the plastic case. These nubs are circled in the below picture. These usually break off when removing the old screen so you may need to take a paperclip or your knife to pop the broken pieces out as not to bend/break the new ones.

Once you have put this new piece back on you can put the phone back together again. Your phone will look almost brand new with this new piece on.
